The Houston Texans host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at NRG Stadium in Houston on Monday night. Kickoff is set for 7:00 PM ET, and Houston is a slight 2.5-point favorite with the total listed at 42.0 points.
Tampa Bay opened the season with a 23-20 win over Atlanta to move to 1-0 and take the top spot in the NFC South. Houston fell 14-9 to the Los Angeles Rams, dropping to 0-1. The last time these teams met was November 5, 2023, when Houston edged Tampa Bay 39-37 in a high-scoring matchup.
Texans Preview – Can the Line Hold Up?
The biggest storyline for Houston is protection. Quarterback C.J. Stroud was pressured on more than 41% of his dropbacks against the Rams and sacked three times. The line struggled to adjust to exotic blitz looks, leaving the offense stuck behind the chains most of the night.
Nico Collins, the team’s top wide receiver, finished with just three catches for 25 yards. His role is critical, but he can only be effective if Stroud has time to throw. Houston must also find consistency in its run game to help balance the attack and limit obvious passing downs.
Injuries are another concern. Center Jake Andrews is out, along with wide receivers Braxton Berrios and Christian Kirk. That leaves the Texans shorthanded and could force more targets to Collins and tight end Dalton Schultz. Stroud’s ability to spread the ball quickly will be tested.
Buccaneers Preview – Pressure as a Weapon
Tampa Bay leaned on its pass rush in Week 1, pressuring Atlanta quarterback Michael Penix Jr. on over 43% of his dropbacks. Todd Bowles’ defense brings blitzes from all over, including safeties and nickel backs, making it tough for young quarterbacks to adjust. Expect the Bucs to bring similar looks against Stroud.
On offense, Baker Mayfield threw three touchdowns in the win over Atlanta. While his completion percentage was low, he was efficient in the red zone. The running game produced enough yards to keep defenses honest, and Tampa Bay’s offensive line held up despite injuries.
Injury concerns remain. Left tackle Tristan Wirfs (knee) has been ruled out, and wide receiver Chris Godwin Jr. (ankle) will also miss the game. Right tackle Luke Goedeke is questionable, which means the Bucs’ offensive line depth will be tested. Even so, Mayfield has been steady with five touchdowns and no interceptions in his last two games dating back to last season.
Betting Prediction
The line suggests this is nearly a pick’em game, with Houston favored at home by less than a field goal. Houston’s offensive struggles in Week 1 raise questions about whether they can handle the Bucs’ blitz-heavy approach. Tampa Bay’s defensive front is built to exploit the Texans’ biggest weakness.
On the other side, Tampa Bay’s injuries at wide receiver and tackle could limit their ceiling on offense. But Mayfield has shown efficiency in high-pressure spots, and the Bucs’ defense gives them a path to keep this close. The total is set low at 42.0, but given both defenses allowed pressure and points late last season, the Over has value.
