As it is with at least four games today, there’s more on the line in the SEC Championship contest than the conference title. This is one of four matchups that will help decide what four teams end up in the CFP Series and which others will spend their time playing in one of 37 other bowl games. At 4 p.m. E.T. today, the #6 Georgia Bulldogs (11-1 Overall, 7-1 SEC) are at the #2 Auburn Tigers (10-2 Overall, 7-1 SEC). Georgia’s one loss in conference and for the season was to Auburn on Nov 11. At that time, the Bulldogs were ranked number one. That game was not even close as the Tigers beat the Bulldogs 40-17. Auburn has suffered two losses this season with the first occurring in week two when they met Clemson. That other Tigers team beat them 14-6. The other Auburn loss was on Oct 14 as LSU, yet another “Tigers” team, won by three points, 27-23. Our Georgia plays Auburn 2017 SEC Championship free pick has the Georgia at -1.5 and the over/under at 47.0.
Georgia has a sound offense that’s putting 35.5 PPG on the scoreboard. The Bulldog offense is very much driven by the ground game. Two senior running backs anchor the ground attack. Nick Chubb and Sony Michel come to this game with 13 TDs each. Chubb has made 178 carries for 1,098 yards, while Michel has 104 carries for 908 yards. Freshman RB D’Andre Swift has 66 carries for 509 yards and two scores. Each back is averaging ober six yards per attempt.
Add to the ground attack a very sound passing game engineered by QB Jake Fromm (62.0 COMP%, 19 TDs, 5 INTs). Senior wideout Javon Wims (38 REC, 631 YDs, 6 TDs) and junior WR Terry Godwin (24 REC, 492 YDs, 5 TDs) are the guys who are primarily on his radar.
The Bulldog D is holding teams to 13.8 PPG. With close to 70 TFL, the Georgia defense is especially tough against the run. They’ve recorded 21 sacks, which is a decent amount but not overwhelming. Top performers include LB D’Andre Walker with 9.5 TFL, LB Roquan Smith, with 100 tackles and 4.5 sacks, and CB D’Andre Baker with nine PD. DB Dominick Sanders is tops on picks with three.
- Balanced defense
- Impressive ground attack
- QB is very good
Like the Georgia offense, the Auburn attack has been good for just over 35 points per game. They’re scoring a bit more than the Bulldogs, as the Tigers have been good for 36.7 PPG. Auburn offers a more balanced attack than Georgia. QB Jarrett Stidham (68.5 COMP%, 16 TDs, 4 INTs) is an accurate passer and cool leader. His running chops are a bit better than Fromm’s. Three receivers have between 20 and 27 receptions each, but one, Ryan Davis, has 69, which is the same number as those three receivers totaled. RB Kerryon Johnson is one of the team’s primary offensive weapons with 250 carries, 1,276 yards, and 17 TDs. He’s averaging 5.6 YPA. Unfortunately, junior RB Kamryn Pettway, who has six rushes for TDs, is out.
The Auburn defense again, like the Bulldogs, is sound. They come in at 16.4 PPG, which means on average they are allowing opponents 2.6 more PPG. The Tigers have more than 70 TFL and 29 sacks. They are low on interceptions, notching only six. Junior LB Jeff Holland is very dangerous. He has four forced fumbles, 8.5 sacks, and 11.5 TFL. All of these are tops for the Tigers. DL Derrick Brown is another solid force, as he has two FF, 3.5 sacks, and 8.5 TFL.
- RB Johnson can determine the outcome
- Tiger D has to stop Georgia’s ground game
- Auburn pass D is vulnerable
