Men’s College Basketball Conferences
As noted, six conferences are highlighted. Naturally, we present them in their order of prominence. Consequently, we start with the top conference and then proceed in descending order. Big East tops all conferences.
The UConn Huskies have been added to the prestigious Big East Conference, which features various top teams, including the #3 Villanova Wildcats and #11 Creighton Bluejays. Other teams include the always pesky Seton Hall Pirates and the potentially dangerous Providence Friars. All of these teams could end up in the NCAA Tournament. Other teams that have a shot at the Big Dance include the Xavier Musketeers, Marquette Golden Eagles, Butler Bulldogs, and St. John’s Red Storm. The DePaul Blue Demons and Georgetown Hoyas look to end the season at the bottom of the Big East standings.
Our college basketball conference preview 2020 – 2021 finds that the #2 Baylor Bears are the best team in the Pac-12. At least, at this point. Although the #6 Kansas Jayhawks have a lot of potential, we find that the #14 Texas Tech Red Raiders and #15 West Virginia Mountaineers look to be mighty competitive. Other Big 12 teams to consider when it comes to March Madness include the #12 Texas Longhorns, Oklahoma State Cowboys, and Oklahoma Sooners. However, we don’t think this trio of teams will vie for first place, but we do believe that they have the potential to battle and beat some of the top teams in the conference. The bottom rungs in the Big 12 will be occupied by the Iowa State Cyclones, TCU Horned Frogs, and Kansas State Wildcats.
The big question concerning the Pac-12 is which of these three teams, the #18 Arizona State Sun Devils, #20 Oregon Ducks,or #22 UCLA Bruins, will finish first? We expect this conference to come down to perhaps one game with the winner being either UCLA or Oregon. Watch out for the unranked Stanford Cardinal, as they are always dangerous. The Utah Utes and USC Trojans could both be tournament bound this year. The final six teams in the Pac-12, the Arizona Wildcats, Colorado Buffaloes, Washington Huskies, California Golden Bears, Oregon State Beavers, and Washington State Cougars, will have a tough time procuring a ticket to the Big Dance.
The SEC includes the #10 Kentucky Wildcats and the #12 Tennessee Volunteers. The Cats are a force with which to contend. The Vols are on their way up the ladder. The LSU Tigers, Florida Gators, and Arkansas Razorbacks are three noteworthy teams. They are contenders. Plus, the Crimson Tide of Alabama will be a very tough opponent. They could be a dark horse. That is, if they can find some offense. Watch out for the South Carolina Gamecocks. It’s true that they are young, but they have talent and could at times be a spoiler. After losing a boatload of quality players, the Auburn Tigers drop down in our projected standings this season. In the lower part of the conference, there are the Texas A&M Aggies, Ole Miss Rebels, Missouri Tigers, and Georgia Bulldogs. The Mississippi State Bulldogs and Vanderbilt Commodores will round out the bottom of the SEC standings.
What conference includes seven teams in the AP Preseason Top-25? That’s right, it’s the Big Ten. The #5 Iowa Hawkeyes are the top Big Ten team in the poll. After Iowa, there’s the #7 Wisconsin Badgers and #8 Illinois Fighting Illini. The Michigan State Spartans rank 13th in the nation. Our college basketball conference preview 2020 – 2021 finds that any four of these teams could finish at the top of the Big Ten.
The #23 Ohio State Buckeyes, #24 Rutgers Scarlet Knights, and #25 Michigan Wolverines are the other three teams in the AP Top-25. We expect these teams will end up somewhere in the middle of the pack. They all have a solid shot at getting an invite to the Big Dance. Also, the Indiana Hoosiers and Purdue Boilermakers stand a chance of going to the NCAA Tournament. Finally, the bottom of the Big Ten standings will be populated by the Minnesota Golden Gophers, Maryland Terrapins, Penn State Nittany Lions, Nebraska Cornhuskers, and Northwestern Wildcats.
The Atlantic Coast Conference includes four AP Preseason Top-25 teams, the #4 Virginia Cavaliers, #9 Duke Blue Devils, #16 North Carolina Tar Heels, and #21 Florida State Seminoles. Although any of those teams could take down the ACC, we like the Cavaliers with the three other teams finishing right behind them. However, the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, Syracuse Orange, Miami Hurricanes, and Louisville Cardinals are all dangerous. They have the talent to take down top teams and most of those teams will likely make it into March Madness. The Clemson Tigers need more scoring, but it’s hard to say where they’ll find it. The North Carolina State Wolfpack are a young, up-and-coming team. Watch out for them next year. The last five clubs, all of which will struggle, include the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Virginia Tech Hokies, Pittsburgh Panthers, Boston College Eagles, and Wake Forest Demon Deacons.
