Washington Mystics vs Golden State Valkyries – WNBA Preview – Aug 13, 2025

The Washington Mystics will welcome the Golden State Valkyries to CareFirst Arena on Wednesday night for a matchup with playoff implications. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 PM ET. Washington comes into this game at 14-17 overall, holding a 9-6 home record, while Golden State sits at 16-15 and 6-10 away from home. Both teams are in the thick of the postseason race, with Golden State in seventh place and Washington sitting 10th, just outside the top eight.

These teams have met twice already this season, and both games were decided by two points or fewer. Golden State took the first meeting on May 21 at home, 76-74, and followed it with a 68-67 road win in Washington on July 31. Both contests stayed under the total, and each was a low-possession, defensive battle. The Valkyries’ most recent win over the Mystics came without key scorer Cecilia Zandalasini, who was out with a foot injury.

Mystics Preview – Can the New Pieces Keep Rolling?

Washington has been adjusting to a new lineup since trading top scorer Brittney Sykes to Seattle. The move was a bold step, but the Mystics have stayed competitive, splitting their last two games. In their most recent outing, they overcame a 14-point deficit in the second quarter to beat Dallas 91-78, showing they can rally and score in bunches despite their roster changes.

Kiki Iriafen continues to be the focal point in the paint, coming off a 23-point, 10-rebound performance. Rookie Sonia Citron has also stepped up, contributing 18 points, six assists, and five rebounds against the Wings. Veteran Stefanie Dolson’s efficient shooting (4-for-5 for 14 points last game) has added stability to the starting unit.

The bench has provided key minutes as well, with recent additions Alysha Clark and Jacy Sheldon combining for 17 points against Dallas. Head coach Sydney Johnson has praised their professionalism and ability to integrate quickly. Washington’s ability to get scoring from multiple spots will be tested against Golden State’s defensive schemes.

Defensively, the Mystics allow 80.5 points per game and hold opponents to 43.5% shooting. Their home court has been a strength, with a +4.1 point differential at CareFirst Arena. Shakira Austin’s status looms large; she’s averaging 12.5 points and 6.6 rebounds but is questionable with a leg injury. If she can’t play, Washington will need more rebounding help from Dolson and Iriafen.

Valkyries Preview – Threes and Rebounding Drive Success

Golden State has found momentum, winning back-to-back games, including a 74-57 victory over Connecticut on Monday. Even without All-Star Kayla Thornton, who is out for the season with a knee injury, the Valkyries have maintained strong offensive balance and excellent rebounding numbers.

Cecilia Zandalasini has been a major factor since returning to the lineup, averaging 14.0 points over her last four games while hitting 44% from three-point range (11-for-25). Tiffany Hayes matched Zandalasini with 17 points in their last outing, while Janelle Salaun contributed 16 on 6-of-10 shooting. Veronica Burton’s 10 assists against Connecticut showed her growing role as a facilitator.

Golden State’s offensive identity is built around perimeter shooting. They lead the league in three-point attempts at 30.2 per game and make 9.5, ranking fifth. Their overall field goal percentage of 40.1% is low, but their spacing creates open looks that can swing games quickly. On the glass, they average 36.0 rebounds, ranking fourth in the WNBA, which allows them to extend possessions and limit opponents’ second chances.

Defensively, the Valkyries are holding teams to 77.5 points per game. They defend the paint well but can give up open midrange looks if their rotations are slow. Without Monique Billings (ankle) and Thornton, their forward depth is thin, which could be a concern if Iriafen and Dolson get going inside.

Key Matchup Factors

The battle between Washington’s interior scoring and Golden State’s perimeter shooting will define this game. If the Mystics can control the paint and limit the Valkyries’ three-point efficiency, they’ll have a strong chance to hold serve at home. Conversely, if Golden State finds early rhythm from deep, the Mystics could be playing catch-up.

Another factor is turnovers. Washington averages 14.8 turnovers per game, while Golden State forces opponents into similar numbers. In both previous meetings, the turnover battle was nearly even, but late-game execution favored the Valkyries. Free throw shooting could also be critical, with Golden State hitting 80.5% from the line, compared to Washington’s 79.7%.

Betting Prediction

Oddsmakers list Washington as a small favorite at -1.5, with the total set at 149.5. Golden State is 19-12 against the spread this season, while Washington is 15-16 ATS. Both previous meetings finished well under their totals, with combined scores of 143 and 135.

The Mystics have been strong at home, but Golden State’s outside shooting and rebounding edge could tilt this game. Zandalasini’s presence adds another scoring threat that Washington didn’t face in the July 31 meeting. With both teams fighting for playoff position, expect another close contest, but the trends point toward a low-scoring game decided in the final minutes.

Pick: Under 149.5; lean Golden State +1.5
