Indiana Fever vs Minnesota Lynx – WNBA Preview – Aug 22, 2025

The Indiana Fever welcome the Minnesota Lynx to Gainbridge Fieldhouse on Friday night in a key WNBA matchup. Tip-off is set for 7:30 PM ET, and this game is the first of a home-and-home series between the two teams that will be played over three days. Minnesota comes in at 28-7, holding the top spot in the Western Conference, while Indiana is 19-16 and sitting third in the East.

The Fever and Lynx last met on July 1 in the Commissioner’s Cup title game, where Indiana pulled off a 74-59 win behind strong defense and balanced scoring. That result showed that Indiana can compete with the top teams even while short-handed. Minnesota has already locked up a playoff berth and is focused on clinching the No. 1 overall seed, while Indiana is working to stabilize its playoff position despite a string of injuries.

Fever Preview – Short-Handed but Still Competing

Indiana has been hit hard by injuries this month. Caitlin Clark has missed 13 straight games with a groin injury and now has a bone bruise on her ankle. Sophie Cunningham, Aari McDonald, and Sydney Colson have all suffered season-ending injuries, leaving the Fever with a thin rotation at guard. This has put heavy minutes on Kelsey Mitchell, who responded with 38 points in Sunday’s comeback win over Connecticut.

Aliyah Boston remains the steady force in the paint, contributing on both ends with scoring, rebounding, and interior defense. NaLyssa Smith provides another scoring option as a forward who can stretch the floor and create mismatches. Guard Odyssey Sims has also stepped into a larger role, providing playmaking and scoring when Mitchell draws extra defensive attention.

The Fever rank in the middle of the league defensively, giving up just over 81 points per game. They forced overtime against Connecticut despite falling behind by 21 points, showing they can stay in games with effort and team play. For Indiana to upset Minnesota again, they will need strong shooting nights from Mitchell and Smith along with Boston controlling the paint.

Lynx Preview – Looking to Rebound After Back-to-Back Losses

Minnesota has been one of the top teams all season and leads the league in several offensive categories. The Lynx shoot a league-best 46.4% from the field and 36.7% from three, ranking them first in efficiency. They average 85.4 points per game, which is third in the league, and they also lead in assists, steals, and assist-to-turnover ratio. Their balance on both ends has been the foundation of their success.

This week, however, Minnesota suffered back-to-back losses for the first time this season. They fell 85-75 at New York on Tuesday and then lost 75-73 in Atlanta on Thursday. In those games, they struggled with scoring consistency, shooting just 41% in Atlanta, and their bench contributed little offense. Cheryl Reeve’s team will look to reset against Indiana, knowing that a strong finish is needed to lock down the No. 1 seed.

Napheesa Collier, who has missed six games with an ankle injury, could be nearing a return. Her presence would give Minnesota a boost both offensively and defensively. In her absence, Kayla McBride has been a steady scorer on the perimeter, Bridget Carleton has stepped up with double-digit scoring, and Jessica Shepard has been key on the glass. The Lynx have enough depth and ball movement to cover for injuries, but Collier’s return would make them even stronger heading into the playoffs.

Betting Prediction

The Lynx enter as a road favorite at around -7.5 on the spread. Minnesota is 20-15-1 against the spread this season, while Indiana sits at 18-18. The Fever have been a tough home team at 10-8 in Indianapolis, but the Lynx have been excellent on the road with an 11-6 record away from home. The key question is whether Indiana has enough scoring without Clark and Cunningham to keep up with Minnesota’s high-powered attack.

Indiana will likely rely on another big scoring performance from Mitchell, but Minnesota’s depth and defense should be too much over four quarters. If Collier returns, the Lynx will be even more difficult to handle, and their ability to share the ball should create open looks all night. Expect Minnesota to bounce back from their recent losses with a strong effort and cover the spread. A projected final score is Minnesota 82, Indiana 73.

Pick: Minnesota -7.5
