CLE Preview – Bibee Looks for Another Gem
Cleveland turns to Tanner Bibee, who was one of the few pitchers to dominate Detroit all season. He went 3-0 with a 0.95 ERA and 21 strikeouts over 19 innings in three regular-season starts against the Tigers. Overall, Bibee finished 12-11 with a 4.24 ERA, but his division numbers have been much stronger. Cleveland trusts him to keep the season alive after a sloppy Game 1 performance cost them the opener.
The Guardians’ bullpen remains a steady group with a 3.13 ERA and 1.17 WHIP on the season. Cade Smith and Hunter Gaddis have been reliable in late-inning roles, while Joey Cantillo gives them a left-handed option for multiple innings. The unit should be fresh, as Bibee often works into the sixth inning or later, reducing strain on the relief core.
Offensively, Cleveland needs more consistency. They managed only four hits in Game 1 and failed to take advantage of a pair of early scoring chances. Jose Ramirez remains the centerpiece, leading the team in home runs and RBIs, while Steven Kwan and Andres Gimenez set the table. Defensive miscues were costly Tuesday, and the Guardians know a clean game is needed to extend their season.
DET Preview – Mize Gets the Ball
Casey Mize will make his postseason debut for Detroit. Mize went 14-6 with a 3.87 ERA this year and was effective against Cleveland, going 1-0 with a 2.08 ERA in three outings. Over his last five starts, he worked at least five innings in each while posting a 3.49 ERA. Detroit will look for him to deliver length and limit traffic on the bases.
Detroit’s bullpen had a rough stretch in September but was excellent Tuesday. Tarik Skubal carried the load into the eighth, and Will Vest finished the job with a four-out save. On the season, the bullpen’s ERA sits at 3.95 with a 1.23 WHIP, but the unit has been inconsistent. Manager A.J. Hinch will need to decide how quickly to turn to arms like Tyler Holton or Paul Sewald if Mize runs into trouble.
The Tigers’ offense has been average overall, scoring 4.66 runs per game. Spencer Torkelson and Riley Greene anchor the lineup, but production has often been streaky. The team benefited from two Cleveland errors in Game 1, and generating more offense against Bibee will be a challenge. Detroit is 83-72 to the Over this season, though head-to-head games with Cleveland have leaned strongly Under.
Betting Prediction
Oddsmakers list Cleveland as a -125 favorite with Detroit +105 and the total at 6.5. The Covers model projects a 4-3 Guardians win with a total near 7.8 runs. The betting trends point to unders between these two, but with Bibee and Mize facing lineups for the third or fourth time in recent weeks, both teams may be able to adjust.
The pitching matchup is nearly even, but Bibee’s dominance against Detroit all season cannot be ignored. Cleveland should rebound from its defensive mistakes and provide more support at the plate, especially with Ramirez and Josh Naylor in the middle of the order.
