NHL Pick: Winnipeg Jets at Washington Capitals

Overview

The Winnipeg Jets visit the Verizon Center in Washington where they take on the Capitals. The Capitals have really owned the Jets over the past few seasons winning the last 6 straight meetings while outscoring the Jets 27-10 in the process.

Head to Head Trends

Jets are 0-6 in the last 6 meetings.
Jets are 4-12 in the last 16 meetings in Washington.

Washington Capitals (-165)

The Washington Capitals are 4th in the Metropolitan Division with 72 points just 5 points behind the 1st place New York Islanders. The Capitals have been one of the hotter teams in the league over the past couple weeks winning 6 of their last 8 games and while that may not sound super awesome it’s more impressive when you consider the teams that they have been playing almost all have been quality teams. The Capitals are one of the higher scoring teams in the league averaging 3.0 goals per game but I think they are just as strong or stronger on defense allowing just 28.9 shots and 2.5 goals per game.

Washington Capitals Trends

Capitals are 10-3 in their last 13 home games.
Capitals are 25-10 in their last 35 games playing on 1 days rest.

Winnipeg Jets (+145)

The Winnipeg Jets are 4th in the Central Division with 70 points and are firmly in a play off spot at the moment but they have 2 or 3 games more played then most of the teams chasing them so if they stumble just a little they can quickly find themselves on the outside looking in. The Jets have been playing fairly decent of late winning 4 of their last 5 games but 3 of those wins came in overtime or the shootout so they may have been more lucky then good. The Jets are about middle of the road on offense averaging 2.7 goals per game and they are also middle of the road defense allowing 2.7 goals per game.

Winnipeg Jets Trends

Jets are 1-5 in their last 6 road games.
Jets are 1-5 in their last 6 vs. a team with a winning record.

Conclusion

I like the Washington Capitals over the Jets in this one. The Capitals are playing some great hockey right now while the Jets on the other hand are playing ok but I just don’t think they are all that good in general and if I had to bet today I say they will not be in the playoffs come spring.
