NHL Pick: Pittsburgh Penguins at Ottawa Senators

Overview

The Pittsburgh Penguins are in Ottawa tonight for a big game with the Ottawa Senators. This game has huge implications for both teams as there are currently 4 teams battling for the final 3 playoff spots in the East including both the Penguins and Senators.

If recent results are any indication of what’s going to happen tonight it’s good for the Penguins as they have played the Senators very well or late winning 10 of the last 13 meetings overall including both meetings this season.

Head to Head Trends

Penguins are 10-3 in the last 13 meetings.
Under is 4-1 in the last 5 meetings.

Ottawa Senators (-115)

The Ottawa Senators are 5th in the Atlantic Division with 93 points 2 points back of the Bruins, Red Wings, and Penguins for the final playoff spot in the East so this is an absolutely huge game for them tonight.

The Senators have been on quite the roll over the past month or so winning 18 of their last 24 games although they do seem to have cooled off over the past couple weeks winning just 3 of their last 7 games with all 3 of their wins coming in overtime or the shootout so they are just barely hanging on right now.

Ottawa Senators Trends

Senators are 18-6 in their last 24 overall.
Senators are 5-1 in their last 6 in the fourth game of a 4-in-6 situation.

Pittsburgh Penguins (-105)

The Pittsburgh Penguins are 4th in the Metropolitan Division with 95 points and are currently tied with 3 other teams for the final 3 playoff spots in the East with the Sen’s just 2 points back so this is also a super important game for the Penguins.

The Penguins have not been playing very good hockey of late losing 9 of their last 12 games and went from battling for 1st place to fighting for their playoff lives. Over their last 12 games the Penguins have allowed 37 goals while scoring just 20 goals so they can’t do anything well right now.

Pittsburgh Penguins Trends

Penguins are 3-9 in their last 12 overall.
Penguins are 14-6 in their last 20 vs. Atlantic.

Conclusion

This is a tough game to call because it’s a huge game for both teams and neither is playing super great hockey right now. The Senators haven’t won a game in regulation in about 2 weeks so they have been more lucky then good of late and the Penguins have been just plain old bad lately.

I’m going to go with the Penguins because I think they are the better team overall and with all their talent it’s only time till they get things figured out again.
