NHL Pick: New York Islanders at Ottawa Senators

Overview

The New York Islanders are in Ottawa for the second game of their home and home with the Senators. In the first game of the home and home the Islanders won 3-2 but even with that win the Islanders haven’t had much luck versus the Senators in recent years. The Islanders are just 18-44-6 in the last 66 meetings overall versus the Senators and are 9-22-3 in the last 34 meetings in Ottawa.

Head to Head Trends

Islanders are 18-44-6 in the last 68 meetings.
Islanders are 9-22-3 in the last 34 meetings in Ottawa.

Ottawa Senators (+107)

The Ottawa Senators are 7th in the Atlantic Division with 25 points 12 points back of the 1st place Tampa Bay Lightning. The Senators got off to a quick start winning 4 of their first 5 games but they haven’t done a whole lot since winning just 6 of their last 19 games although 5 of those losses came in overtime or the shootout including their last game versus the Islanders so maybe their due for a couple of those games to go their way. The Senators are averaging 2.6 goals per game on offense and  2.8 goals per game on defense.

Ottawa Senators Trends

Senators are 1-5 in their last 6 overall.
Senators are 6-2 in their last 8 vs. Metropolitan.

New York Islanders (-118)

The New York Islanders are tied for 1st place in the Metropolitan Division with the Pittsburgh Penguins but the Islanders do have an extra game played. The Islanders had a mediocre start to the season with 6 wins though their first 11 games but since then they have probably been the hottest team in the league winning 12 of their last 14 games. One thing I noticed about the Islanders when I was looking at the standings was they are the only team in the NHL without a overtime or shootout loss this season. The Islanders are 8-0 when tied after 3 periods so they’re probably due for quite a few overtime loses over the next month or so.

New York Islanders Trends

Islanders are 21-7 in their last 28 overall.
Islanders are 18-6 in their last 24 vs. a team with a losing record

Conclusion

I like the Ottawa Senators over the Islanders in this one. The Islanders have been super lucky of late with 7 of their last 12 wins coming in extra time so they’re really just due for a few losses in general but their is also the fact that this is the second game of a home and home between the Islanders and Senators and a lot of times the team that losses the first game wins the second game.
