NHL Pick: New Jersey Devils at New York Islanders

New Jersey DevilsOverview

The New Jersey Devils visit the Barclays Center in New York today where they take on division rivals the New York Islanders. The Islanders have owned the Devils over the past few seasons winning 7 of the last 8 meetings overall and the last 4 straight played in new York.

Head to Head trends

Devils are 1-7 in the last 8 meetings.
Devils are 0-4 in the last 4 meetings in New York.

New York Islanders (-145)

The New York Islanders are 3rd in the Metropolitan Division with 39 points 3 points behind the 1st place Washington Capitals. The Islanders got off to a quick start this season winning 6 of their first 9 games but then they really cooled off over the next few weeks especially on offense losing 8 of their next 12 games. It looks like the Islanders are heating up again winning 6 of their last 7 games but the one thing I don’t like is that they have gone to overtime or the shootout in their last 5 straight games so they’re winning games but they’re also getting a little bit lucky.

New York Islanders Trends

Islanders are 6-1 in their last 7 overall.
Islanders are 4-0 in their last 4 home games.

New Jersey Devils (+135)

The New Jersey Devils are 4th in the Metropolitan Division with 34 points 8 points out of 1st place. The Devils have been surprisingly good so far this season but they have run into some injury problems of late. Over the last week or so they have lost their top two center-men in Adam Henrique and Travis Zajac and they might also be without winger Lee Stempniak today as well. The Devils really can’t afford to lose these guys for very long because their offense isn’t all that great in general averaging just 25.8 shots and 2.48 goals per game so take away a couple of their main guys and they will be in some major trouble.

New Jersey Devils Trends

Devils are 0-5 in their last 5 games following a win.
Devils are 18-37 in their last 55 vs. a team with a winning record.

Conclusion

I like the New York Islanders over the Devils in this one today. The Islanders are pretty hot right now winning 6 of their last 7 games and even though the Devils have played some solid hockey this season they are going to be without a couple keys guys today and I think that is really going to hurt their already struggling offense.
