MLB Pick: Boston Red Sox at St Louis Cardinals

cardinals mlb teamThe Boston Red Sox head into Busch Stadium in St Louis for a three game series with the Cardinals. Being an interleague matchup these teams obviously don’t play each other very often although they did face each other in the 2004 and 2013 World Series with the Red Sox winning both of those.

Head to Head Trends

Red Sox are 5-2 in the last 7 meetings.
Under is 6-2 in the last 8 meetings in St. Louis.

St Louis Cardinals (-147)

The St Louis Cardinals are 2nd in the National League Central just 1 game back of the Milwaukee Brewers. The Cardinals are 8 games over .500 on the season at 59-51 and they have one of the better home records in the NL at 31-24. The Cardinals are one of the better pitching teams in baseball allowing 3.70 runs per game but they also struggle with the bats averaging just 3.72 runs per game. At home the Cardinals average 3.91 runs per game on offense and actually allow 3.98 runs per game on defense so it’s kind of surprising their record at Busch Stadium is as good as it is. Starting for the Cardinals today is Lance Lynn who is 11-8 with a 2.98 ERA in 22 starts this season. Lynn pitches a bit better at home where he is 7-2 with a 2.72 ERA.

St Louis Cardinals Trends

Cardinals are 7-3 in Lynns last 10 home starts.
Cardinals are 62-27 in their last 89 home games vs. a team with a losing record.

Boston Red Sox (+137)

The Boston Red Sox are 5th in the American League East 14 games back of the Baltimore Orioles. The Red Sox are done for the season they have nothing to play for and they just traded away a couple of their top pitchers in Lester and Lackey. The only thing the Red Sox will get up for now is when they take on their arch rivals the New York Yankees. The Red Sox are the second lowest scoring team in the American League averaging just 3.85 runs per game and they allow 4.36 runs per game so they don’t have much going for them at all right now. On the hill for the Red Sox is Rubby De La Rosa who is 3-4 with a 3.64 ERA in 9 starts this season.

Boston Red Sox Trends

Red Sox are 2-10 in their last 12 overall.
Red Sox are 0-4 in De La Rosas last 4 road starts.

Conclusion

I like the Cardinals for many reasons today like they have the better starting pitcher and the Sox just suck in general plus they’re at home but what I really like about this game is the Sox have thrown in the towel for the season plus they’re coming off a series with the Yankees so it’s a huge let down spot for the Sox meanwhile the Cards are in the middle of a playoff race and they can get a little revenge since losing last years World Series to the Sox.
