MLB Pick: Toronto Blue Jays at LA Angels

Overview

The Toronto Blue Jays are in LA for the second game of their three game series with the Angels. The Blue Jays have played the Angels fairly well of late winning 5 of the last 9 meetings but before that they had won just 1 of the previous 11 meetings.

Head to Head Trends

Blue Jays are 6-14 in the last 20 meetings.
Over is 16-7 in the last 23 meetings.

Toronto Blue Jays (-120)

The Toronto Blue Jays are 2nd in the America League East just a half game back of the New York Yankees but they do have a comfortable 4 game lead in the wild card standings. The Blue Jays have been probably the best team in baseball over the past few weeks winning 17 of their last 21 games and they have done that with an offense that hasn’t really been firing on all cylinders for a while now.

The Jays have a lot of hitters that have really struggled over the past few weeks but they have been able to get the job done for the most part with just a couple of their big boys hitting well. A lot of the hitters that were struggling over the last few weeks are showing signs of getting hot so don’t be surprised if the Blue Jays go on a run where they score a ton of runs over the next few weeks.

Starting for the Blue Jays today is Marco Estrada who is 10-7 with a 3.20 ERA on the season. Estrada wasn’t in the rotation to start the season but he has pitched well since join the rotation back in June and has turned into a super solid 2nd or 3rd  starter.

Toronto Blue Jays Trends

Blue Jays are 17-4 in their last 21 overall.
Blue Jays are 10-4 in Estradas last 14 starts.

LA Angels (+110)

The LA Angels are 2nd in the American League West 3.5 games back of the 1st place Houston Astros and are just a half game up on the Rangers in the wild card standings. The Angels were red hot about a month or so ago and especially their offense who were just scoring a ton of runs but they have turned cold winning just 9 of their last 28 games and have scored 3 or less runs in 18 of those games.

On the hill for the Angels today is lefty Andrew Heaney who is 5-1 with a 2.43 ERA in 10 starts this season. Heaney has pitched well this season his numbers look really good so I guess we’ll just have to wait and see what he can do against the Jays tonight.

LA Angels Trends

Angels are 9-19 in their last 28 overall.
Angels are 8-2 in Heaneys last 10 starts.

Conclusion

I’m going with the Toronto Blue Jays over the Angels in this one. The Blue Jays offense are looking like they are really starting to get hot and I think they have another big game with the bats again tonight.
