MLB Pick: Tampa Bay Rays at Baltimore Orioles

orioles mascotOverview

The Tampa Bay Rays are in Baltimore today for the final game of their three game series with the Orioles. This is actually just the second game of the series as yesterdays game was rained out. Baltimore took the first game of the series fairly easily putting up 6 runs on Rays ace Chris Archer on their way to a 6-1 win.

Head to Head Trends

Over is 4-1 in the last 5 meetings in Baltimore.
Home team is 4-0 in Gibsons last 4 games behind home plate.

Baltimore Orioles (+104)

The Baltimore Orioles are 4-0 so far this season sweeping the Minnesota Twins to open the season and their other win versus the Rays. The Orioles are looking super solid to start the season especially their pitching not allowing more then 2 runs in a game and their bats have also been solid averaging 4.25 per game.

Starting for the Orioles in this one is Vance Worley who will be making his first start of the season and first start with the Orioles. Last season Worley pitched for the Pirates and was less then impressive going 4-6 with a 4.02 ERA in 8 starts.

Baltimore Orioles Trends

Orioles are 9-0 in their last 9 overall.
Orioles are 41-16 in their last 57 home games vs. a team with a losing record.

Tampa Bay Rays (-106)

The Tampa Bays Rays are 2-3 on the season with a couple late come from behind wins over the Blue Jays although I would say it was more the Blue Jays losing those couple games then the Rays winning them.

On the hill for the Rays today is Jake Odorizzi who pitched well in his first start allowing just 1 earned run and striking out 10 over 5.2 inning of work versus the Blue Jays. Last season Odorizzi went 9-9 with a 3.35 ERA in 28 starts which are some pretty solid numbers especially for pitching the AL East.

Tampa Bay Rays Trends

Rays are 0-4 in their last 4 road games.
Rays are 0-5 in Odorizzis last 5 road starts vs. a team with a winning record.

Conclusion

I’m going with the Baltimore Orioles over the Rays in this one. I think the Rays might have the pitching advantage with Odorizzi but the Orioles are playing well to start the season and they’re a nice little home underdog so I think they’re a solid play today.
