MLB Pick: LA Angels at Minnesota Twins

Overview

The LA Angels head up north to Minnesota for a big four game series with the Twins. The Twins haven’t had much luck versus the Angels of late losing 9 of the last 10 meetings including the last 4 played in Minnesota.

Head to Head Trends

Angels are 9-1 in the last 10 meetings.
Angels are 4-0 in the last 4 meetings in Minnesota.

Minnesota Twins (-120)

The Minnesota Twins are 2nd in the American League Central 10 games back of the 1st place Kansas City Royals but they are just 1.5 games back of the Astros for the second wild card spot. The Twins have one of the better home records in the league at 43-28. When at home in Target Field the Twins average 4.77 runs per game on offense while allowing just 3.93 runs per game on defense for a +0.84 run differential compared to on the road where they have a run differential close to -1.00.

On the hill for the Twins today is lefty Tommy Milone who is 8-5 with a 3.73 ERA on the season. Milone has pitched ok this season but his one downfall is he don’t really go all that deep into games. He’s only pitched more then 7 innings once this season and hasn’t reached the 100 pitch mark in his last 10 starts.

Minnesota Twins Trends

Twins are 6-1 in their last 7 home games vs. a left-handed starter.
Twins are 5-2 in Milones last 7 home starts.

LA Angels (+110)

The LA Angels are 3rd in the American League West 5 games out of 1st place and 3.5 games back in the wild card race so they really need to get going soon before it’s too late. The Angels are kind of like the Twins they play great at home but are horrible on the road. The Angels are 44-31 at home but just 29-41 on the road in large part due to their pitching staff who are allowing about a full run more on the road then they do at home.

Starting for the Angels today is lefty Hector Santiago who is 8-9 with a 3.21 ERA on the season. Santiago has also been ok this season but just like the rest of the Angels pitching staff he does much better at home then on the road. At home Santiago is 4-2 with a 2.53 ERA but away from home he is just 4-7 with a 4.09 ERA.

LA Angels Trends

Angels are 7-20 in their last 27 road games.
Angels are 0-4 in Santiagos last 4 starts with 4 days of rest.

Conclusion

I like the Minnesota Twins over the Angels in this one. This is mostly a case of one team that plays really well at home versus a team that plays really poor on the road but I also like the Twins because they hit leftys pretty good as well.
