MLB Pick: Arizona Diamondbacks at Boston Red Sox

The Arizona Diamondbacks are in Fenway Park tonight where they take on the Boston Red Sox. The Diamondbacks lost the first game of the series 9-4. They got out to a quick start scoring 2 runs in the top of the 1st but the Red Sox quickly bounced back scoring 4 in the bottom and another 4 in the 2nd on their way to the easy 9-4 win.

Head to Head Trends

Diamondbacks are 1-8 in the last 9 meetings.
Under is 8-3-1 in the last 12 meetings.

Boston Red Sox (-190)

The Boston Red Sox are 3rd in the American League East 2.5 games back of the 1st place Baltimore Orioles. The Red Sox are probably the best hitting team in the league averaging 5.42 but they were hitting the ball much better earlier in the season averaging close to 6 runs per game which was an unrealistic pace to keep up for the whole season but even so their bats have cooled off significantly over the last couple months.

Starting for the Red Sox in this one is Clay Buchholz who is 4-9 with a 5.64 ERA on the season. After starting the season in the rotation Buchholz got demoted to the bullpen because he was just so bad. Buchholz hasn’t been as bad out of the bullpen but I really don’t see him doing much today I think he’ll be lucky to make it to the 5th inning.

Boston Red Sox Trends

Red Sox are 8-22 in Buchholzs last 30 home starts.
Red Sox are 3-13 in Buchholzs last 16 home starts vs. a team with a losing record.

Arizona Diamondbacks (+170)

The Arizona Diamondbacks are 5th in the National League West 17 games out of 1st place. The Diamondbacks looked like they had a decent team there for a while but they had a rough stretch from about the end of June to the beginning of August where they won just 7 of 32 games. It does look like they have turned things back around again winning 4 of their last 5 games so they’re obviously out of the playoff picture but might be a team worth keeping an eye on down the stretch betting wise.

Taking the mound for the Diamondbacks tonight is Archie Bradley who is 4-7 with a 4.80 ERA on the season. Bradley has been hit or miss this season which is basically the standard for average pitchers so it’s kind of hard to know what to expect out of them on a game to game basis.

Arizona Diamondbacks Trends

Diamondbacks are 4-1 in their last 5 overall.
Diamondbacks are 6-13 in their last 19 vs. a team with a winning record.

My Conclusion

I like the Arizona Diamondbacks over the Red Sox in this one. I usually don’t like betting against the Red Sox at home but Clay Buchholz is a total bum and the Diamondbacks look like they might be starting to turn things around plus they’re a fairly big underdog so I think they’re worth a shot tonight.
