TCU Preview – Hoover Leads the Way
Sonny Dykes enters his fourth season at TCU. He has built the Horned Frogs into a consistent Big 12 contender, and this year’s team again looks strong. Quarterback Josh Hoover set a school record with 3,949 passing yards last season, along with 27 touchdowns. His progress as the season went on made TCU a dangerous opponent late in 2024.
Hoover’s accuracy and ability to throw deep passes will be a problem for UNC’s rebuilt defense. He has reliable receivers and can extend plays with his decision-making. TCU averaged nearly 280 passing yards per game in Hoover’s starts last season. Expect the Horned Frogs to lean on the passing game again in Chapel Hill.
The running game will also play a role, even though it was less consistent last year. Establishing balance will help open up opportunities downfield. TCU scored 30 or more points in seven games last season, showing how effective their offense can be when clicking.
On defense, TCU is missing linebacker K. Abrams due to a leg injury. Even so, the unit returns experience at key spots. They held opponents under 20 points in four of their final five games in 2024, including a 34-3 bowl win over Louisiana. The secondary will be tested against Lopez, but the lack of film on UNC adds a layer of uncertainty.

The Horned Frogs have continuity on offense and a proven quarterback in Hoover, while UNC is entering a completely new era with Belichick. Historically, teams with stability have the edge in Week 1, especially against programs undergoing complete rebuilds.
UNC may show promise under Belichick, but chemistry takes time, and the Tar Heels’ defense remains unproven. TCU has enough firepower to control this game and cover the spread.
