NHL Pick: Pittsburgh Penguins at Winnipeg Jets

pirates NHL picksOverview

The Pittsburgh Penguins continue their current 5 game road trip tonight in Winnipeg when they play the Jets. This has been a series that has been absolutely dominated by the Penguins. Since the Jets left Atlanta a few years back the Penguins have won 7 of the 9 meetings but if you wanted to go back and count the Atlanta games Pittsburgh have won 17 of the last 20 meetings and 40 of the last 53.

Head to Head Trends

Penguins are 40-13 in the last 53 meetings.
Penguins are 8-3 in the last 11 meetings in Winnipeg.

Winnipeg Jets (+127)

The Winnipeg Jets are 3rd in the Central Division with 15 points and are just 2 points back of the 1st place Nashville Predators. The Jets didn’t start off the season all that well winning just 1 of their first 5 games but they have somehow turned things around winning 6 of their last 8 games since. I think there’s a lot of luck in this recent stretch of good play as the Jets have picked up a couple wins in OT or the Shootout and they have also won two games 1-0 both of which they were out shoot so it seems like bounces are going their way right now but that won’t last forever. On offense the Jets are averaging just 1.9 goals per game but they are very solid on defense allowing only 2.1 goals per game.

Winnipeg Jets Trends

Jets are 27-55-1 in their last 83 in the fourth game of a 4-in-6 situation.
Jets are 33-81 in their last 114 vs. a team with a winning % above .600.

Pittsburgh Penguins (-140)

The Pittsburgh Penguins are 1st in the Metropolitan Division with 17 points 3 points up on the 2nd place New York Islanders. After starting out the season kind of slow the Penguins have really took their game to a whole nother level and are just steamrolling teams right now. The Penguins have won their last 5 straight games while outscoring their opponents 23-4. The Penguins are the highest scoring team in the league averaging 4.1 goals per game plus they have a really good defense allowing just 2.1 goals per game.

Pittsburgh Penguins Trends

Penguins are 5-0 in their last 5 overall.
Penguins are 36-17 in their last 53 vs. Western Conference.

Conclusion

I can’t believe the Penguins are just a -140 favorite over the Jets in this one even if they are in Winnipeg. The Jets basically have no offense and they’ve been pretty lucky to have as many wins as they do and I think they’re going to need a lot more then luck to have any chance to beat the Penguins who have been an offensive juggernaut so far this season.
