MLB Pick: Seattle Mariners at Baltimore Orioles

Overview

The Seattle Mariners are in Baltimore for the second game of their three game series with the AL East leading Orioles. The Orioles beat the Mariners 2-1 in the first game of the series. The Orioles have really had the Mariners number over the past couple seasons winning 14 of the last 20 meetings overall and 8 of the last 10 meetings in Baltimore.

Head to head Trends

Mariners are 2-8 in the last 10 meetings in Baltimore.
Mariners are 6-14 in the last 20 meetings overall.

Baltimore Orioles (-115)

The Baltimore Orioles are 1st in the American League East 2.5 games clear of  the Toronto Blue Jays. The Orioles have been playing some real good consistent baseball over the past month or so winning 35 of their last 55 games. The Orioles have a solid offense averaging 4.20 runs per game but I think their real strength has been their pitching staff who are actually 3rd best in the AL with just 3.92 runs allowed per game. On the hill for the Orioles is Miguel Gonzalez who is 5-5 with a 3.77 ERA in his 17 starts this season. Gonzalez has been very consistent this season allowing 3 runs or less in 15 of his 17 starts.

Baltimore Orioles Trends

Orioles are 4-1 in their last 5 games vs. a left-handed starter.
Orioles are 18-6 in Gonzalezs last 24 home starts.

Seattle Mariners (+105)

The Seattle Mariners are 3rd in the American League West 10.5 games back of the Oakland Athletics. The Mariners went on a pretty good hot streak back in July winning 13 of 16 games and looked like they would content for a wild card spot but they have since cooled off and have only won 7 of their last 20 games. The Mariners have the lowest runs allowed in all of baseball with 3.33 runs allowed per game but they also have the lowest runs scored in the AL averaging just 3.81 runs per game. Starting for the Mariners today is lefty James Paxton who is 2-0 with a 2.25 ERA in 2 starts this season but this will be his first start since April 9th due to a strained muscle in his back.

Seattle Mariners Trends

Mariners are 3-7 in their last 10 overall.
Mariners are 1-5 in their last 6 vs. a team with a winning record.

Conclusion

I like the Baltimore Orioles to win again today they have been playing some good ball for a while now while the Mariners have really cooled down over the past few weeks and also Paxton is a bit of a question mark making his first start since coming off the disabled list.
