MLB Pick: New York Yankees at Houston Astros

Overview

The New York Yankees head into Houston for a three game series with the Astros. The Astros have played the Yankees fairly well of late winning 10 of the last 17 meetings overall but they are just 2-3 over the last 5 meetings played in Houston.

Head to Head Trends

Yankees are 2-3 in the last 5 meetings in Houston.
Astros are 4-0 in Keuchels last 4 starts vs. Yankees.

Houston Astros (-140)

The Houston Astros are 2nd in the American League West just 2.5 games back of the Texas Rangers. The Astros got off to a slow start this season which was kind of surprising considering how well they played last season but they turned things around and have been one of the better teams in the league over the past couple months winning 37 of their last 53 games including 21 of their last 27 played at home.

On the hill fore the Astros today is lefty Dallas Keuchel who is 6-9 with a 4.70 ERA on the season. Just like the Astros as a team Keuchel also got off to a super slow start but he has been much better of late as well with 6 straight quality starts.

Houston Astros Trends

Astros are 21-6 in their last 27 home games.
Astros are 24-6 in Keuchels last 30 home starts.

New York Yankees (+130)

The New York Yankees are 4th in the American League East 7.5 games back of the 1st place Baltimore Orioles. I don’t really know what to think about this Yankees team. They actually have a -0.26 run differential yet they are still 2 games over .500 so this would almost indicate a slump or losing streak where they are going to stop getting the bounces and start losing some of the close games that they have been winning so far this season.

Starting for the Yankees in this one is the big man Micheal Pineda who is 4-9 with a 5.25 ERA on the season. Pineda has some of the best stuff of any pitcher with 127 strikeouts in just 106 innings but he’s allowed 18 homeruns which has really hurt him.

New York Yankees trends

Yankees are 5-12 in their last 17 road games vs. a left-handed starter.
Yankees are 1-5 in Pinedas last 6 road starts vs. a team with a winning record.

Conclusion

I like the Houston Astros over the Yankees in this one. The Astros bats are really heating up averaging 6.40 runs per game and this is also a team that hits a lot of homeruns in general so Pineda might be in for a rough game tonight.
