Golf Picks: The Greenbrier Classic

This week the PGA tour is in White Sulphur Springs West Virginia for the Greenbrier Classic. The old White course was the first course at The Greenbrier and opened in 1914. The course is fairly long for a par 70 at just under 7300 yards. Last year Jonas Blixt won with a total of 13 under par two stokes ahead of a group of players which included this weeks betting favorite Jimmy Walker.

Brendon Todd (22-1)

Brendon Todd is 10th in this years FedEx Cup standings and 47th in the official world golf rankings. Todd picked up his first career win early this season when he won the HP Byron Nelson Championship beating Mike Weir by two strokes. This season Todd has 6 top ten finishes and 10 top twenty five finishes in his 21 events played. Todd has also been on quite the hot streak recently. Over his last five tournaments he has a win, two 5th place finishes, an 8th place finish and a 17th place finish. Todd has just one other start at the Greenbrier which was a 46th place finish in 2012.

Brendon Todd Stats

Todd is 10th in the FedEx Cup standings
Todd is 6th in strokes gained putting.
Todd is 3nd in sand save percentage.

Brendan Steel (40-1)

Brendan Steel is 54th in the FedEx up standings and 102nd in the official world golf rankings. Brendan is a bit of a long shot considering he has just the one career win which was all the way back in 2011. The main reason I like Steele this week despite his relatively low 40-1 odds for a guy with just one career win is his back to back 5th place finishes over the last two weeks. Last year was Steele’s only other appearance at the Greenbrier and finished tied for 41st.

Brendan Steele Stats

Steele is 21st in driving distance.
Steele is 112th in driving accuracy.

Nick Watney (66-1)

Nick Watney is 125th in the FedEx Cup standings and 69th in the official world golf rankings. Watney has struggled over the past season and a half with just four top ten finishes in  his last 44 events. This season he has no top ten’s and just two top twenty five finishes in 18 tournaments. I guess the one bright side is that Watney is still only 33 years old and has 5 career wins so I think he has multiple wins left in him and at 66-1 this week it’s worth taking a shot.

Nick Watney Stats

Watney has 5 career wins.
Watney is 5th in total driving.
Watney ranks 118th in stokes gained putting.
