MLB Pick: Seattle Mariners at Toronto Blue Jays

Overview

The Seattle Mariners visit Rogers Centre in Toronto for the first game of a three game series with the Blue Jays. The Blue Jays haven’t had much luck versus the Mariners over the past few seasons winning just 9 of the last 25 meetings but they have played them fairly well at home in Toronto over the years wining 38 of the last 56 meetings.

Head to Head Trends

Mariners are 5-2 in the last 7 meetings.
Mariners are 18-38 in the last 56 meetings in Toronto.

Toronto Blue Jays (-170)

The Toronto Blue Jays are 3rd in the American League East just 1.5 games out of 1st place. The Blue Jays were playing some great ball heading into the all-star break winning 8 of their previous 9 games and it looks like they are still playing well post break winning their last 3 in a row.

The Blue Jays offense started kind of slow this season but they have gotten stronger as the season has gone on and are not averaging just under 5 runs per game. The Jays pitching has been solid allowing 4.09 runs per game, their bullpen blew a lot of games early in the season but they have also been much better of late.

On the hill for the Blue Jays in this one is Marco Estrada who is 5-3 with a 2.93 ERA on the season. With a good offense like the Blue Jays have I don’t know how Estrada has just 5 wins on the season. Estrada has allowed 3 or less runs in 13 of his 15 starts this season so I guess it’s a combination of lack of run support and the bullpen blowing games late.

Toronto Blue Jays Trends

Blue Jays are 11-3 in their last 14 overall.
Blue Jays are 7-2 in Estradas last 9 starts.

Seattle Mariners (+150)

The Seattle Mariners are 3rd in the American League West 6.5 games back of the 1st place Texas Rangers. The Mariners are just 1 game over .500 on the season but I think they’re a much better team then that and I wouldn’t doubt if they contend for a playoff spot come September.

Taking the mound for the Mariners today is lefty James Paxton who is 2-4 with a 4.56 ERA in 9 starts this season. Paxton had a couple good starts earlier in the season but he’s been knocked around in 4 of his last 5 starts and hasn’t looked very good at all.

Seattle Mariners Trends

Mariners are 2-8 in Paxtons last 10 starts.
Mariners are 5-17 in their last 22 road games.

Conclusion

I like the Toronto Blue Jays over the Mariners in this one. I think the Mariners are a solid well rounded team but the Blue Jays have been one of the better teams in the league over the last month or so and Estara has been one of the best pitchers in baseball all season.
